When you want to install a pond in your garden, there are some essential questions to ask so that the development is a success . These are the ones I will cover in this article.
creating a pond in your garden
Creating a pool has many advantages such as bringing tranquility to the place with the gentle sound of water, to make an interesting mirror effect for large gardens as well as smaller ones or to have the joy of see the local fauna rush like birds that come to drink.
To be sure that your pool can bring you all this happiness, it should not be done at random without reflection. Before you begin, you need to make a number of decisions to make it a success and have minimal maintenance .
To facilitate this, I have listed 4 questions to guide you in your choices.
Where to install my pond?
Of course, the first question to ask is the location of your future water feature.
In order to make the most of it, you must place it in a clearly visible space from a maximum of places in your garden, but also from your house if you have windows. This will, at the same time, facilitate surveillance if you have children.
Avoid placing the pond too close to a large deciduous tree for several reasons. First of all because of the fall of the leaves in the autumn which risk to dirty the water, but also because of the roots being able to damage the construction.
The other aspect to take into account to determine the location of the basin is sunshine . It will be necessary to find the good compromise between a space which is neither too sunny, nor too shaded . It takes enough sun for your aquatic plants to grow, but it is also not necessary that the water is heated too much which would cause the appearance of algae. It is estimated that a sunny location 6H per day is a good compromise.
Unless you have a natural source of water nearby, the vast majority of basins are closed. That is to say, thanks to a pump, the water circulates to infinity in the installation without having to add (or almost!). It should be placed near an electrical supply (or at least in a place where you can bring electricity) necessary for the pump. But not too far from a water point either, because even if the system is in closed circuit, with evaporation, it is necessary to supplement the volume regularly. It is therefore preferable not to have to carry full watering cans on tens of meters.
Thanks to his first reflections, you must be able to identify the place of your garden most adapted to receive your pond . Let’s go on.
What form to give it?
The shape your pond will mainly depend on the style you want to give it. It must be in line with the rest of your garden and your home .
Two great styles stand out: formal with a well-marked geometric shape. This will go for modern gardens with clean lines, if you have a French park to create a large mirror of water, or in the case of a garden in length where to place a pool perpendicular will break the linear effect.
You may prefer a more natural style with a shape randomly like a small lake. It will be fine for rustic gardens, cottages or English where we like to imitate nature.
In this case, be careful not to draw a too quirky surface with nooks where the water will circulate badly.
If you want more information on the styles of basins, I refer you to one of my previous articles on the subject: .
At this point, the appearance of your body of water begins to materialize in your mind . This is important for aesthetics, but we will see later that this is also necessary to determine more technical aspects such as the choice of material.
What will I put in my pool?
You do not know yet if you are going to put plants (it may surprise you, but there are formal ponds without plant, where one looks above all for the mirror effect) or fish? Do you think that you will think about it once the work is finished? It is a mistake! The presence of aquatic plants and animals will affect the design of your pond . So you have to make a decision on that right now.
You will discover in the next paragraphs that your answer will determine several criteria during the realization.
What size for my pond?
The size will be determined by the space available in your garden of course, but also by the importance you want to give the pool. Is it just a decoration on a small part of your layout or will it be the centerpiece of your garden, and so big compared to other elements?
In both cases, there are certain rules to follow.
First of all, be aware that the larger the pool, the better its biological balance and therefore, the easier it will be to maintain . If you want to create a small piece of water, then opt for a version without fish with no or very few plants.
In other cases, it will require a minimum depth of 50cm so that sunshine does not influence the temperature of the water too quickly. If you want to put different plants, you need to create different levels at different depths because not all aquatic plants have the same need for water immersion. If you want to put fish there , a depth of at least 80cm will be necessary for them to survive during the winter.
And now, a little bit of technique
We went through the 4 main questions. Until now, they have mainly served you for aesthetic choices. We will see that you have determined, without knowing it, several technical aspects.
There are two main types of materials for creating a pond.
You have preformed plastic models . We find mainly to create small basins and the shape is already determined . You will find with a round or rectangular geometric outline. This will be good for ponds – fountains with little or no vegetation. There are also versions with more natural shapes and often different levels to accommodate plants.
If you are going into this mode of construction, check that it matches the answers you gave earlier in terms of size, depth and style.
The other solution to create your pond is to use a PVC or EPDM tarpaulin . In this case, your imagination is the only limit. The membrane will follow the contours of your earthwork. You are free in the choice of shape, surface and depth . You can create the pool that exactly matches your needs listed previously.
You can easily find on the sites of the manufacturers of tarpaulins, the rules of calculation to determine the necessary membrane surface according to the length, the width and the depth of your body of water.
Pump, filter, sterilizer and accessories
The pump will keep the water moving and circulate it in a filter that will retain impurities. The UV sterilizer, optional, will limit the appearance of certain algae.
The capacities of these elements are determined by the dimensions of your pond and therefore its volume . This will be weighted if you are going to integrate fish. The filtration will not be the same with or without animals.
Here again, in the garden center, on the sales sites and manufacturers, you will find the elements to determine the necessary power for each device.
Then you can embellish your realization of one or more jets of water or a waterfall.
Now, do you see more clearly in the layout of your future pond?
